Pakistan Lifts Ban On Facebook
05.31.10 |
(Islamabad) -- Facebook is back up and running in Pakistan. A Pakistani court has lifted a ban imposed two weeks ago when officials in the overwhelmingly Muslim country discovered a page on the social networking site for a contest to draw the Prophet Mohammed. Muslims view any depictions of Mohammed as blasphemous. The Pakistani government has given assurances that no blasphemous material will be available online in Pakistan in the future.
The Everybody Draw Mohammed Day contest was conceived by a Seattle-based artist who was protesting Comedy Central's censorship of an episode of "South Park" that depicted Mohammed in a bear suit. The contest was scheduled to end May 20th.
