04.17.09 | Terry Diener

The superintendent of the Pittston Area School District is the first to be charged in a federal probe into contracts and corruption. Ross Scarantino is accused of accepting thousands of dollars in cash in return for awarding contracts. The federal criminal complaint says the money changed hands in February 2008. It does not name the person who allegedly gave Scarantino money or what the person might have received in return. The veteran educator took an indefinite leave of absence yesterday.
