The holiday commemorates the end of slavery.

U.S. Senator John Cornyn says the day marks a time to "reflect on our history, the mistakes we have made."  He insists, "while we have come a long way, we know there is more we need to do."

Governor Tom Wolf signed the measure into law last year and is encouraging Pennsylvanians to reflect on the importance of the state holiday. He says this is a moment to honor African-American history and consider how each of us can promote equality, liberty, and justice for all people.
