State regulators sent a letter to Spectrum cable on Wednesday, threatening to strip its license in New York if it did not stop making claims that it's bringing internet, in a reasonable time frame, to tens of thousands of rural customers.

State Department of Public Service Chairman John Rhodes said the company is making claims it knows are false, and it harms customers who rely on honest and accurate information when choosing among internet competitors.

Spectrum responded by saying it's already expanded internet to 42,000 rural customers and has more expansion plans for the future.
