NYS Trooper dies after fall at Letchworth State Park

A New York state trooper died yesterday afternoon after falling into a gorge at Letchworth State Park during a training exercise.  Ross Riley, a 17-year veteran of the force, fell 30 feet off a ledge while training with the Special Operations Response Team.  He was performing "high angle rescue training" above Wolf Creek in Castile and fell while attempting to hoist a dummy onto a stretcher while rappelling down the side of the cliff.  Riley served as a U.S. Marine in the Persian Gulf conflict and received commendation for his service as a member of the Mobile Response Team at Ground Zero after 9/11.  The 44, was a married father of three young girls. His wife, Heidi, is a New York State Police Commander.
