NY's governor signs law that muffles non-profits on political candidates

Governor Andrew Cuomo says he signed the bill to prevent President Trump from protecting tax-exempt groups that engage in political activity.

Cuomo insists our democracy must be protected from what he called "unjustified interference." The bill codifies the decades-old Johnson Amendment, which bans non-profits from engaging in political campaigns.

Two years ago the president signed an executive order to loosen the restrictions of the Johnson Amendment in the name of free speech and religious freedom.
