NY To Mark One Year Anniversary Of Gay Marriage
07.23.12 |
The one year anniversary of gay marriage is Tuesday in New York. The Empire State became the largest state in the nation to legalize gay marriage a year ago, July 24th, 2011. Supporters hoped it would boost national momentum and pump money into the state with a flurry of weddings. But as the anniversary nears, its effects have been hard to measure. Wedding planners say business is up slightly, but not booming. Experts predicted 66-thousand weddings in 3 years, or 22 thousand a year. But the latest figures show just 34-hundred have occurred outside New York City. No state has enacted a gay marriage law since New York, but the issue is on the ballot this fall in Maine and Minnesota.
