A proposal to ban cigarette sales in drug stores as well as in supermarkets and big box retailers that have pharmacies has been snuffed out in the New York State Assembly. The bill was voted down by the Assembly's Health Committee Tuesday.

New York's chapter of the American Lung Association is calling on the Senate to take up the measure. The organization says it will support any bill that makes smoking inconvenient and more expensive. Some large supermarket chains have already voluntarily ended cigarette sales.
