Number of Pennsylvania School Districts May Be Reduced
02.05.09 |
Governor Ed Rendell took many school district administrators and educators by surprise yesterday. As part of his budget proposal, the governor wants a study to see if the number of school districts can be cut by 80-percent, bringing the total from 501 to a maximum of 100.
Mr. Rendell is recommending a 14-member legislative commission be appointed and take a year to come up with, at most, two different reorganizations plans. He says Maryland has 27 schools, one for each county. He also says Pennsylvania had 27-hundred school districts in the 1950s.
