Nobel Prize Goes To President Obama For Diplomacy, Cooperation
10.09.09 |
President Barack Obama has become the first sitting U.S. president since Woodrow Wilson to win a Nobel Peace Prize. The committee that awards the honor cited Obama's accomplishments toward fostering world peace after just nine months in office. In particular, the committee cited his efforts to, quote, "strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." The Norwegian Nobel Committee also noted that Obama had begun his presidency with an immediate appeal to the Muslim world with a widely acclaimed speech in Cairo, Egypt. The Committee said Obama had also given the world, quote, "hope for a better future" with his calls for reducing nuclear stockpiles.
The prize is worth about one-point-four million dollars and is given in Oslo, Norway in a ceremony attended by the country's king. Two other sitting U.S. presidents have won the prize -- Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt.
