New York Legislature to Debate Gay Marriage Today
05.12.09 |
The New York state Legislature is set to take up the issue of same-sex marriage in Albany. A vote is scheduled for today on a gay marriage bill in the state Assembly. The legislation is similar to the measure that passed the Assembly in 2007, which was ultimately killed in the then Republican-controlled state Senate. It is unclear if Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith will bring the bill to the floor for a vote.
Smith has stated he will not allow the measure to fail in the closely-divided state Senate. Four Democratic Senators have publicly stated they will vote against the measure. No Republican Senators have indicated they will back the proposal, but Senate Minority Leader Dean Skelos has told his caucus this is not a party-line issue in New York.
