New legislation in NY calls for repealing portions of the Safe Act

The Safe Act has come under fire for several years by gun rights activists.

Republicans say changes would apply only to residents outside of New York City.

State Senator Robert Ortt says the Safe Act has "been a major source of controversy, of contention, and of division."

GOP lawmakers say gun ownership is part of the culture in upstate communities, more so than it is in New York City.

Critics give the effort little chance of passing in the Democratically- controlled Assembly.
