New Exercise Guidelines To Be Issued For Cancer Patients
06.02.10 |
New guidelines are coming regarding exercise for cancer patients. In the past, cancer sufferers had been advised by doctors to rest. Now, new national guidelines are being issued that suggest just the opposite, telling patients they should find ways to be physically active both during and after treatment. A 13-member American College of Sports Medicine expert panel developed the new recommendations after reviewing and evaluating literature linked to the combination of exercise and cancer therapy.
Research Director Kathryn Schmitz with the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine said, quote, "we have to get doctors past the ideas that exercise is harmful to their cancer patients." She said the prevailing attitude that patients shouldn't push themselves during treatment is flat wrong and avoiding inactivity is essential. The guidelines recommend 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, the same regimen recommended for the general public.
