According to a report from the commonwealth's Healthcare Cost Containment Council the increase in heroin hospitalizations among adults 55 and older is offset by a decrease in pain medication overdose hospitalizations.

Heroin overdose hospitalizations among those 55 and older increased 36 percent between 2016 and 2017--the greatest increase of any age group.

However, officials say the analysis doesn't reveal if people are switching from abusing pain medication to heroin.
