Mexico Cans Customs Agents
08.17.09 |
(Mexico City) -- Mexico has fired more than one-thousand customs agents. The newspaper "Reforma" in Mexico City is reporting the customs authority simply allowed the contracts for eleven-hundred agents who worked at airports and border crossings to expire.
It's part of a nationwide effort to modernize the customs service and root out bad elements. An entirely new force of nearly 15-hundred agents will be sworn in to replace those who've been let go. During the transition, the Mexican army has taken control of at least one border crossing. Some of the fired customs agents will be allowed to reapply for their jobs, but the names of others have been turned over to federal prosecutors.
The newspaper says the officers were fired because tons of drugs and weapons are still flowing across the border from the U.S. into Mexico. More than 13-thousand people including members of drug gangs, police officers and civilians have been killed since President Felipe Calderon promised a crackdown on drug cartels in 2006.
