Membership in PA's volunteer fire and ambulance companies continues to lag

According to former Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner Ed Mann, the ranks of volunteer firefighters and EMTs have dwindled from about 300,000 in the 1970s to around 50,000 today.

Randy Vulakovich, chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness Committee, wants to take another look at a 2004 report from the Senate resolution 60 commission. He says its time to review the 23 recommendations – to see what was or was not done on each of them – and what the next steps need to be in order to preserve and grow fire and EMS systems for the future of the commonwealth.
