Largest ID Theft Mastermind Pleads Guilty

(Boston, MA) -- A guilty plea will be entered by the man the government accuses of being the mastermind of a massive identity fraud theft. Albert Gonzalez will enter the plea by September 11th to 19 counts related to stealing debit and credit card numbers from several major U.S. retail chains. Gonzalez's plea will settle cases in Boston and New York. He and two co-defendants are also facing federal charges in New Jersey in connection with the largest identity theft ever in the country.
The 28-year-old Gonzalez is already jailed and had previously been a government informant. In the still-pending New Jersey case, he was charged with stealing more than 130 million debit and credit card numbers from retailers. Officials said Gonzalez would drive around Miami with a laptop computer and use it to hack into the wireless networks of retailers. He would download the account numbers when he found an open network and sell the information.
