Kennedy out of the Running for Senate Seat
01.22.09 |
She's out. Caroline Kennedy has officially withdrawn her name for consideration to become New York's next junior U.S. senator. Kennedy issued a statement just after midnight Thursday that "for personal reasons" she is withdrawing her name from consideration.
The move comes on the heels of a medical scare involving Kennedy's uncle, veteran Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts. Senator Kennedy had to taken to a hospital on Tuesday after suffering a seizure during a luncheon with the newly-inaugurated President Obama.
The decision also comes amid recent polls that have shown eroding support among New Yorkers for Caroline Kennedy. State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo now appears to be the favorite choice.
Some had considered Kennedy's appointment a done deal, while other political observers believe she received serious consideration only because she was the daughter of late President John F. Kennedy.
Governor Paterson says he will name Hillary Clinton's successor on Saturday. Among those still under consideration are Cuomo, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi and Representatives Kirstin Gillibrand and Steve Israel.
