Judge Orders Religious Runaway Reunited With Ohio Family

The teenage girl who ran away to Orlando out of fear that she would be murdered by her own family for converting to Christianity has been ordered to return home to Ohio. Seventeen-year-old Rifqa Bary fled to Central Florida back in July afraid that her Muslim family would harm her for converting. A judge ruled Tuesday that she should return to her home near Columbus, Ohio but only after her parents' immigration problems have been resolved and with assurances that she can continue her enrollment in a virtual school in Ohio. Rifqa and her lawyers fear her parents will try to send her to their native Sri Lanka. An Ohio judge dialed in to the hearing and told the court her state should have jurisdiction and said that before any reunion takes place everyone involved should undergo a mental evaluation. Child welfare and law enforcement agencies in both states conducted an investigation and found no evidence to substantiate the teen's fears.
