Israel Expected To Be Pushed Into Global Anti-Nuclear Arms Pact

(Vienna) -- Arab diplomats backed by Iran are expected to push Israel to join a global anti-nuclear arms pact this week during a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Israel is believed to have the only nuclear arsenal in the Middle East, but has neither confirmed or denied it. Arab diplomats argue Israel's presumed nuclear weapons are a threat to regional security and believe the Non-Proliferation Treaty or NPT could help support peace.
However, officials in Washington warn that singling out Israel could have a negative effect on bigger efforts to ban weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East. The move may also disrupt the peace talks recently restarted between Israel and the Palestinians. Israel says it won't even consider signing the treaty until there is peace in the Middle East.
