Iraqi Shoe Thrower Sentenced to Three Years In Prison
03.12.09 |
The Iraqi reporter who tossed his shoes at former President Bush was sentenced to three years in prison today. Muntazer al-Zaidi's lawyer said the sentence handed down by a Baghdad court was too harsh and, "not in harmony with the law." He vowed to appeal.
Zaidi's sister Ruqaiya cried at the verdict and shouted anti-government slogans. Zaidi was a reporter for Al-Baghdadiya television when he famously hurled his footwear and insults at Mr. Bush during a news conference for the Iraqi press corps last December. Police officers dragged Zaidi from the room and allegedly beat him, and he was charged with assaulting a visiting head of state.
