Iraq Election Results Trickling In

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki holds a slight lead over his rivals according to partial results from Iraq's tight election race. The latest results, released today, show Maliki's State of Law coalition ahead of the Iraqi National Alliance by about 16 percent. Election watchers say the race may still be too close to call until initial results are in for all 18 of Iraq's provinces, including key areas like Baghdad. The ethnically and religiously diverse capital city is home to at least six-million people.
Hamdiya al-Husseini, a top official with the Independent High Electoral Commission, dismissed charges of serious fraud coming from former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi's camp, including reports ballots were found in the garbage and more than 200-thousand soldiers' names were missing from voting rosters. "The process of counting and sorting ballots is going well, with the presence of observers from political parties and under international supervision," Husseini said.
