Iran's Supreme Leader Endorses Ahmadinejad

(Tehran) -- Iran's supreme leader has officially endorsed hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for a second term as president of the Islamic Republic. The endorsement from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei comes as Ahmadinejad prepares to take the oath of office for a second term. He is scheduled to be sworn in before the Iranian parliament on Wednesday.
Iran has been wrapped up in bloody political turmoil since Ahmadinejad was declared the winner of the Middle Eastern nation's disputed June 12th presidential election. Opposition leader Mirhossein Moussavi and others have alleged the vote was rigged.
A mass trial for more than 100 people held in connection with protest surrounding the disputed election kicked off Saturday. The defendants are accused of conspiring with foreign powers to start a revolution with terrorism, subversion and participating in a media campaign to cast a shadow on the election.
Opposition leaders claim the defendants have had no access to lawyers. One of the people on trial is "Newsweek" reporter Maziar Bahari, who holds both a Canadian and Iranian citizenship. So far, there appears to be no plans to arrest opposition leader Moussavi.
