Iran's Guardian Council Says Presidential Election Was Fair
06.26.09 |
Iran's top legislative body has declared that the country's disputed presidential election was fair. A spokesman for the Guardian Council said today that reviews of the defeated candidates' complaints are almost completed and so far the council has found no major election violations. He also called the June 12th race that re-elected President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad [[ ahmah-DIN-ee-zhahd ]] the "healthiest" election since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Hardline preacher Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami is expected to reinforce the government's position that the vote was fair when he leads Friday prayers.
Meanwhile, protests in the Islamic Republic have started to die down due to an aggressive government crackdown. Around 20 people have been killed in post-election violence. Defeated candidate Mirhossein Mousavi is urging his supporters to continue "legal" protests over the election he believes was rigged. Today, Mousavi supporters plan to release thousands of balloons carrying the message "Neda you will always remain in out hearts" in honor of a young woman killed during a protest last week.
