Iranian Revolutionary Guard Warns Election Protestors
06.22.09 |
Iran's Revolutionary Guards say they won't put up with the continued protests against Iran's disputed election on June 12th. After more than a week of protests that have shaken the Iranian capital, a statement on the Guards' website says rioters will be confronted by the Guards, quote, "in a revolutionary way." Still, around one-thousand Iranians have been seen gathered in a central square in Tehran today. Iranian state television said ten people were killed and more than 100 others were wounded in demonstrations on Saturday.
The demonstrations are in protest of an election that saw hardline Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad [[ ahmah-DIN-ee-zhahd ]] earn another four years in office. His main opponent, Mirhossein Mousavi [[ MEER-hos-SAYN moo-saw-VEE ]], has repeated backed his supporters' protests. Mousavi wrote on his website, quote, "protesting against lies and fraud is your right." A senior Iranian politician recently remarked that the ground has been paved to pursue Mousavi legally for calling street protests and issuing what he called "provocative statements."
