Iran Releases 140 Election Protesters
07.29.09 |
(Tehran) -- Iran has released 140 opposition activists who had been in prison since that nation's presidential election protests in June. The "Washington Post" says the move may have been prompted by abuse allegations and reports that four activists died in custody recently. In another development, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered another Tehran prison be closed due to the conditions there. A political activist said disease was "rampant" at the Kahrizak detention facility because there are no toilets.
An Iranian lawmaker says there are still 150 people behind bars in addition to about 50 people accused of planning the Islamic state's protests following the disputed presidential election. Opposition Web sites are urging Iranians to attend a memorial gathering tomorrow in Tehran for those killed in post-election demonstrations, which could lead to clashes between protesters and government security forces.
