Insurer Agrees To Cover Two-Day Hospital Stay For Mastectomy
05.27.10 |
Healthcare insurer WellPoint says it'll pay for a two-day hospital stay for mastectomy patients. The move comes as WellPoint's come under fire for its harsh policies toward breast cancer patients. The patients often found themselves the subject of investigations that would turn up almost any excuse to drop their coverage. While WellPoint has denied it ever targeted breast cancer patients, it's responding to congressional scrutiny with more generous policies. The latest is allowing women getting mastectomies up to 48 hours in the hospital post-surgery. A bill is pending before Congress that would mandate insurer coverage in the event a woman and her doctor agree that the full 48 hours is needed.
