Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company has become the first insurer in the nation that won't cover damage related to natural gas drilling. The company said its personal and commercial policies were "not designed" to cover damage related to hydrofracking, a process that uses chemicals to break up shale and release the natural gas. It's a process used in Pennsylvania and eyed for the Marcellus Shale in New York. Mutual Insurance said, quote "risks in fracking operations are too great to ignore".
