Honduran Election Threatens U.S.- Latin American Relations

Conservative Honduran opposition leader Porfirio Lobo has won his country's disputed presidential election. Lobo was declared the winner overnight after a tally of the ballots showed him carrying 55-percent of the vote in Honduras. His main rival, ruling party candidate Elvin Santos, trailed with 38-percent. The race could drive a wedge between the United States and many Latin American countries. The leaders of Brazil, Argentina and other left-leaning nations that dominate the region are already disputing the legitimacy of the vote, which was promoted by the leaders of a coup that ousted leftist Honduran President Manuel Zelaya in June. Meanwhile, Washington is expected to back Lobo, a 1970 graduate of the University of Miami. The U.S. State Department has called the election a, quote, "necessary and important step forward."
