Governor David Paterson this morning signed a bill to extend for 13 weeks state unemployment benefits for tens of thousands of New Yorkers slated to receive their last benefits checks this week. Paterson and state lawmakers rewrote the legislation to ensure that it qualifies for federal economic stimulus money.

However, Paterson said this morning that the extension will cost New York approximately $4 million. He adds that the cost will be offset by an increase in personal income taxes.
