Tiffany Heitkamp's law was named after a 20-year- old Syracuse woman who was killed in a boating accident.
The new law requires courts to consider prior DWIs or driving while ability impaired conviction when sentencing  a person for similar boating offenses.

Keir Weimer was drunk while driving the boat Heitkamp was killed on.

He had a prior conviction and a pending DWI case at the time, but police couldn't charge him as a repeat offender, because he was not operating the same type of vehicle.

The new law will require a judge to impose the tougher sentence on those that repeatedly get behind any wheel while intoxicated.
