Government Targets Distracted Driving
01.13.10 |
The government is targeting distracted drivers. A newly released public service announcement urges drivers to pay attention to the road. Distracted driving is blamed for thousands of accidents, deaths and injuries each year. The Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are urging drivers to check out a new website, distraction.gov
DOT and the National Safety Council have also announced formation of FocusDriven, a nonprofit campaign designed to raise awareness about driver distractions and to support victims of those types of accidents. The effort will be led by Jennifer Smith, a safe-driving activist whose mother was killed by a driver chatting on a cell phone in 2008. According to DOT, operating a vehicle while talking on a phone makes those drivers as dangerous as someone who is behind the wheel and over the legal drinking limit.
