Gov. Rendell Accused of Sitting On Money
01.30.09 |
Republicans in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives have accused Governor Ed Rendell of sitting on millions in unspent money that could be used to balance the state budget. The current fiscal crisis could be alleviated by spending $268 million in prior-year balances, but Republicans contend that Rendell has offered to use only $101 million of it to help close the budget gap.
House Minority Leader Sam Smith said Republican members pressed Rendell's budget aides last year about the "unlapsed" funds. He says a tax increase is not the answer. Meanwhile Representative Karen Beyer plans to introduce legislation that will call for a mandatory annual review of state spending before approving any new budgets.
