Gender Gap Narrows In Math, Widens For Reading

Girls have caught up to boys in math, but boys have fallen behind in reading. That's the mixed news coming from the Center on Education Policy in a state-by-state study of math and reading scores in 2007 and 2008. The center used tests given to fourth, eighth and eleventh graders under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
Boys fell an average of ten percentage points behind girls on state reading proficiency tests. The trend held true in elementary, middle and high schools across the country. Meanwhile, the gender gap in mathematics has all but closed. There are still states where boys outperform girls on proficiency tests. But there are an equal number of states where the girls out-test the boys. Fourth grade boys did especially well, and outdid girls in math in most states. The bottom line is that both genders achieved parity.
