Former President Jimmy Carter in Gaza

Former President Jimmy Carter continues a challenging mission in the Middle East Today. He's visiting the Hamas controlled Gaza strip, the final stop on his Middle East tour that began with hopes of advancing understanding between warring parties. Earlier, Carter had urged Israel to lift a blockade against the Palestinian region and stop treating Gaza residents like, quote, "savages." Shortly after he rolled into Gaza with a convoy of United Nations vehicles he stopped and got out of his SUV to view damage done by Israeli explosives in December and January. Speaking with a group of graduating students Carter said, quote, "I have to hold back tears when I see the deliberate destruction that has been raged against your people."
Not everyone is enthused about the visit. There are reports Hamas found two roadside bombs set near a crossing between Israel and Gaza. It's thought the objective was to set off a blast next to the former president's vehicle as he left Gaza. Fingers are being pointed at Hamas extremists linked to al-Qaeda. The former president will report his progress to the Obama administration when he returns to the U.S.
