Former NYC Mayor Giuliani Speaks Out On Ground Zero Mosque

(New York, New York) -- A new poll finds a majority of New York City residents are opposed to the proposed Islamic community center and mosque two blocks from the World Trade Center site. A Siena College poll shows 63-percent are against building the mosque, while 27-percent support the plan. Appearing on NBC's "Today" show this morning, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said he understood people's concerns about the project.
"If you're going to so horribly offend the people...the most affected by this, the families of the September 11th victims who I happen to know and have gotten to know, you know, really well, then how are you healing?"
Giuliani's comments come as the imam at the center of the so-called Ground Zero mosque debate has been tapped by U.S. officials to promote religious tolerance in the Arab world. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf will begin a two-week speaking tour today in Bahrain. He'll also travel to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to address audiences on Muslim life in America.
