Former NY State Comptroller Pleads Guilty To Corruption

(New York, NY) -- New York's former State Comptroller who resigned in disgrace for using a state worker to chauffeur around his wife, pleaded guilty to a corruptions charge. Alan Hevesi was arraigned today in State Supreme Court on an official misconduct felony charge. He admitted to selling access to the state's 125-billion dollar pension fund.
Hevesi read a statement in which he admitted receiving more than a million dollars in gifts including free first class travel to Israel from a California money manager. In the statement, Hevesi apologized to the state, the court and his family. He resigned in 2006 after pleading guilty to defrauding the government in connection with using the state worker to cart around his wife.
He was released in his own recognizance after surrendering his passport. He will be sentenced on December 16th and could receive up to four years in jail. But a minimum sentence would not require jail time. Hevesi is the highest ranking state official to plead guilty in the investigation into the state's pension fund.
