Prosecutors from U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara's office issued written statements this week, asking a district judge to imprison the once-powerful Manhattan Democrat to prison longer then any other New York legislator convicted of public corruption, which would be at least 14 years.

In the documents, they argued his crimes corrupted the institution. But defense lawyers countered, saying Silver's age, health, and record of service call for leniency. Silver's sentencing is set for May 3.
