Five Muslim Americans Make Appearance In Pakistani Court

Five Muslim Americans from the Washington, DC area appeared in a Pakistani courtroom today to face charges of trying to contact al-Qaeda-linked groups and engage in terrorist activities. They were ushered inside under heavy security with armed police escorts and elite forces posted on surrounding rooftops. The men are accused of traveling to Pakistan and trying to hook up with two militant groups in December. Police have said they plan to ask for life sentences. The five were taken into custody in early December. The alleged intentions of the five young men were brought to attention of authorities when family members contacted CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, fearing the men had been radicalized and were bound for Pakistan. The group then contacted the FBI. Before leaving, one of the men left a so-called farewell video proclaiming that he wanted to protect Muslims. On December 17th a court ruled that the men could not be deported and must face trial.
