First Commercial Shrimp Season Since Oil Spill Opens Today

It's a big day along the Gulf Coast, as the first commercial shrimp season since the BP oil spill opens this morning. To mark the occasion, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke is due to visit Louisiana today to discuss with business owners the ongoing impact of the worst oil spill in American history. He'll also be touring a local seafood plant. All this as, the National Hurricane Center is keeping a close eye on a low pressure area over Georgia as that system threatens to create a cyclone over the Gulf of Mexico.
As for now, the storm system -- the last remnants of Tropical Depression Five -- is located over the extreme northern Gulf of Mexico, just south of Panama City, Florida. There is about a 50-percent chance the system will gain enough strength to become a tropical cyclone. Chances are even greater that the system will bring heavy rains and gusty winds to the northern Gulf coast from the Florida Panhandle all the way to southern Louisiana through tomorrow.
