Feds Want Broader Internet Wiretap Authority

The Obama administration wants broader authority to tap into Internet and e-mail communications from possible terror suspects. The "New York Times" reports that the White House will deliver a bill to Congress next year which would force service providers to have the capability of complying with federal wiretap orders. The sweeping authority would effect providers of encrypted e-mail, such as BlackBerry, along with Facebook and video communication services such as Skype.
The feds want the authority because they say many terror suspects no longer use more traditional lines of communication, like cell phones or e-mail. FBI lawyer Valerie Caproni told the "Times" that access is needed to, "protect the public safety and national security."
