FDA Lowers Age Limit to Buy Contraceptive Pill

The FDA has lowered the age limit for the sale of a controversial contraceptive pill. Now, women as young as 17 can buy the so-called "Plan B" pill without a prescription. The FDA overturned a Bush administration policy in making the decision. That policy limited the sale of Plan B to women 18 and older.

A federal judge recently ruled the Bush policy was based on politics, not science, and ordered the FDA to lower the age limit. Under the new rule, anyone over 17 can purchase the Plan B pill without a prescription. Plan B is a so-called morning-after pill that prevents conception if taken within 72 hours.
