East Coast Braces For Storm After Tuesday Travel Woes
12.09.09 |
A winter storm is forecast to sock the East Coast with snow, ice and rain today. The morning commute may be a challenge for motorists as the National Weather Service says a quarter-inch of ice could be expected in Pennsylvania, western Virginia, Maryland and eastern West Virginia. The storm is on course to dump a few inches of snow on New England, followed by sleet and rain. The storm left behind travel nightmares yesterday in the Midwest where hundreds of flights were canceled and interstates were closed.
Karen Pride, spokeswoman for the Chicago Department of Aviation says the weather kept 200 flights on the ground at Chicago's O'Hare Airport. In addition, Chicago's Midway Airport experienced flight delays averaging five hours. In Iowa, Jessica Lown of the Department of Public Safety says multi-vehicle accidents closed interstates 80 and 35. Schools in Des Moines called off classes early. "The Durango Herald" reports at least 14-hundred customers were without power after nearly four feet of snow blanketed the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. The area was whipped by winds gusts of 100 miles an hour.
