Detained Hikers Reunited With Mothers
05.20.10 |
Three American hikers being held in Iran on espionage charges finally got to see their mothers today. Twenty-seven-year-old Shane Bauer, 31-year-old Sarah Shourd and 27-year-old Josh Fattal have been locked up since they were arrested last July for crossing into the Islamic Republic illegally during a hiking trip in northern Iraq. Today, Iran's state-run Press TV aired footage of the three University of California, Berkeley students embracing their mothers inside a room in what appeared to be an upscale Tehran hotel. Cindy Hickey, Nora Shourd and Laura Fattal arrived in Iran on one-week visas on Wednesday for the chance to see their children for the first time in nearly ten months. The women are hoping to meet with Iranian leaders during the trip so they can ask for the students' release. Their visit comes as the U.S. is pushing for more UN sanctions over Iran's nuclear program.
