Dad-to-Be Sparks Free Speech Debate With Anti-Abortion Billboard
06.08.11 |
A billboard in New-Mexico put up by a dad-to-be has started a firestorm over free-speech rights and the abortion debate. The billboard features 35-year-old Greg Fultz holding a black cartoon sketch of an 8-week old baby. It reads, "This would have been a picture of my two month-old child, if the mother had decided not to kill our child." Fultz's ex-girlfriend has taken him to court for harassment and violation of privacy, and a domestic court official has recommended the billboard be removed. The mother says her private life is not a matter of public interest, and the billboard has caused her emotional distress. However, Fultz's attorney argues the order violates his client's free speech rights. He says, "As distasteful and offensive as the sign may be to some, for over two hundred years in this country the First Amendment protects speech." The case is now heading to a U.S. District Court.
