The rules of the pilot program made families of inmates buy items from pre-approved state vendors instead of sending care packages of their own into the prisons.

Andrew Cuomo put an immediate stop to the program after outcries from prison advocates.

NYSCOPBA President Michael Powers says this practice could have helped eliminate some of the opiod epidemic that's found its way inside the prisons.

The group representing corrections officers says it will work with the corrections department and the governor's office to create a new program to protect officers and prisoners.
