Congress Working Quickly to Extend Cash-For-Clunkers Program

(Washington, DC) -- Members of the House and Senate could vote today on a two-billion-dollar extension of the government's new "cash for clunkers" auto rebate program. It provides as much as $4,000 when a consumer trades in an older gas guzzler. Michigan Senators Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin say they're hopeful the full House can vote to extend the program later today before House members depart for their annual August recess.
The White House had said late yesterday the clunkers program designed to improve weak U.S. auto sales was already out of money due to unexpectedly brisk business. The White House supports using funds from an energy loan guarantee program in the economic stimulus package to extend the clunkers trade-in program.
House Republican Jeb Hensarling of Texas, however, criticized the program as, "an example of the government picking winners and losers'' among businesses and industries hit hard by the economic downturn.
