Commission Rejects Landmark Status At WTC Site

(New York, NY) -- New York City's Landmarks Preservation Commission has unanimously rejected a bid to give landmark status to an old Burlington Coat Factory building near Ground Zero. Christopher Moore, one of the nine the commissioners who voted to reject the landmark status, says the memory on 9-11 does not reside in the building.
The decision allows a group to demolish the building on Park Place and Broadway to make room for a 13-story Islamic center. Opponents claim building a mosque a few blocks from Ground Zero would be insensitive to New Yorkers who lost loved ones on 9-11. The Landmarks Preservation Commission has said it's decision has nothing to do with future plans of the building. Mayor Bloomberg and state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo are among the state and city officials that support the one-million-dollar potential project.
