Castle Doctrine Approved in Pennsylvania
06.21.11 |
The Castle Doctrine is on its way to Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett's desk for his signature. The bill would widen the right to use deadly force in self-defense in Pennsylvania outside a person's home or business. It eliminates a requirement that people try to retreat first before they use force. In a 45 to 5 vote last night, the Senate approved the latest Castle Doctine Bill without any debate.
Governor Ed Rendell vetoed a similar measure last year, saying it would escalate violence. Police say it could be used as a defense for criminal activity in the courts. But in the end, senators said not having the bill takes away a family's right to protect itself, and that is more important.
