California Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Traditional Marriage Supports

The California Supreme Court is going to let supporters of traditional marriage stand up for their rights. After hearing more than an hour of arguments Tuesday morning, the California Supreme Court signaled it won't stand in the way of a showdown in federal court over the state's ban on same-sex marriage. A panel of justices appeared to agree with sponsors of Proposition 8 that they have the right to appeal a federal judge's decision declaring the 2008 ballot measure unconstitutional. Before this, a gay judge ruled the group could not appeal his decision. Then the Governor and the Attorney General backed the judge. This ruling, by a set of 7 judges, allows the fight for traditional marriage to move on. After their ruling, due out in 90 days, the next step is the decision on allowing or banning gay marriage in California. That decision, lawyers say, will likely be made in the U.S. Supreme Court.
